About this Manuscript

Bhāgavatapurāṇa is listed among the 18 Mahāpurāṇas. This Ms. contains a commentary Bhāgavatabhāvārthadīpikā by Śrīdharasvāmin which gives good clarity on the complex philosophy and devotional themes present in the text. The text primarily belongs to the Vaiṣṇava philosophy. It emphasizes devotion to Kṛṣṇa, avatāra (incarnate) of supreme deity Viṣṇu. The text discuses the creation of the universe, different realms of existance and the cyclic nature of time. The text is rich in philosophies of Vedānta sects like Advaita, Viśiṣṭādvaita and Dvaita. It has abundance of Bhakti Yoga and some elements of Sāṃkhya philosophy. The text is also popularly used as a prayer in public gatherings for devotion commonly known as Bhāgavata Kathā narrated and explained by a Kathā Vācaka (Story Teller) to the audience envoking themes related to Dharma in the context of domestic and professional life. The main text consists of 12 Skandhas (Cantos) which are further divided into 335 Adhyāyas with 18,000 verses depending on the edition. This manuscript contains the sixth skandha. This Ms. is written in 14–20 lines per folio. Cover and back page are blank. The (Pūrna Virāma) full stop style vertical brackets and significant text in red. Mistakes are covered with yellow. Some additions in the margins.
