The short manuscript entitled Viśvantarasya Varṇana Kathā (“The Tale of Viśvantara”) is a Sanskrit verse narrative concerning Viśvantara. It describes in detail his life as a prince and during exile, with particular emphasis on his practice of dāna pāramitā (the perfection of generosity). The tale is narrated by the Buddha at Jetavana Monastery in Vaiśālī at the request of Ānanda.
