Garuḍopaniṣad

Garuḍopaniṣad is a minor Upaniṣad text which is classified as a Vaiṣṇava Upaniṣad associated with the Atharvaveda according to the Muktikā Upaniṣad. It is a medieval period upaniṣad rather than a vedic one. The text is in praise of Garuda the eagle who is a mount of the supreme Hindu deity Viṣṇu. The text contains verses which are believed to cure and prevent venom from snake. It may be more symbolic like a protective omen than being an actual cure as eagles are one of the few creatures who prey on snakes in the food chain. The text is not exactly matching other editions. This Ms. is written in 15 lines in total. Title present in colophon (f. 1b). According to the penn. cataloguer the Ms. was sold and wrapped together along with Ms. Coll; Item 725 (all accessible on the UPenn. site). Mistakes are blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. The Ms. is dated saṃvat1922 phālgunaśudiṭaroja 5 śubham.
