About this Manuscript

Bhāgavatapurāṇa Aṣṭamaskandha is the eighth Skandha (canto) of the Bhāgavatapurāṇa which is listed among the18 Mahāpurāṇas. This Ms. contains four Adhyāyas (chapters). Adhyāya 2 from Śrīśuka Uvāca which should actually be Śrīśuka Uvāca in (f.1b–5a), Adhyāya 3 from Śrīvādarāṇiruvāca in (f.5a–8b), Adhyāya 4 from Śrīśuka Uvāca in (f.8b–11a). These chapters contain the story of the elephant king named Gajendra while bathing in a lake. He is attacked by a crocodile who seizes him. At first he tries to free himself relying on his strength but failed since this was not a regular crocodile. He realized the limitations of his own strength and being helpless he surrendered to the supreme Hindu deity Viṣṇu acknowledging his dependence to the Lord. There is a part in the Vāmanapurāṇa called Gajendramokṣa which narrates a similar story. This Ms. is written in 7 lines per folio. Cover page contains title. Back page is blank. There are triple red vertical margins on each side of the folio. Significant words and syllables rubbed with orange powder
