Bhūṣaṇasāra

Bhūṣaṇasāra is a text written by Koṇḍabhaṭṭa, who lived in the early 17th CE, son of Raṅgojī and nephew of Bhaṭṭojī Dīkṣita. The text deals with Philosophy of Grammar known as Vyākaraṇa Darśana a fringe philosophy not included in the Ṣaḍdarśana the 6 schools of Āstika Indian philosophies (Belivers of the Vedic texts and their sanctity). The 6 being Sāṅkhya; Yoga; Nyāya, Vaiśeṣika; Mīmāṃsā and Vedānta. Vyākaraṇa Darśana is considered to be a sect of Vedānta Philosophy but in many ways is it's own because of having unique concepts like Śabdabrahma and Sphota which are not present in any other sect of Vedānta. Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇasāra consists of 15 Chapters that are named [1] Dhātvarthanirṇyaḥ (f.2a), [2] Lakārārthanirṇyaḥ (f.14a), [3] Subarthanirṇyaḥ (f.15b), [4] Nāmārthanirṇyaḥ (f.19b), [5] Samāsaśaktinirṇyaḥ (f.21a), [6] Śaktinirṇyaḥ (f.26b), [7] Nañarthanirṇyaḥ (f.29a), [8] Nipātārthanirṇyaḥ (f.30b), [9] Tvādibhāvapratyayārthanirṇyaḥ (f.33a), [10] Devatāpratyayārthanirṇyaḥ (f.34b), [11] Abhedaikatvasaṅkhyānirṇyaḥ (f.35a), [12] Saṅkhyāvivakṣānirṇyaḥ (f.35b), [13] Ktvādyarthanirṇyaḥ (f.36a), [14] Sphotasyāvatarṇikā (f.37a), [15] Sphotanirṇyaḥ (f.41b). They are a total of 74 Kārikās (Metered Verses) in the text which have been taken from the work 'Śabdakaustubha' written by Bhaṭṭojī Dīkṣita. This has been acknowledged by the author in one of the 5 Maṅglācaraṇa (ceromonial verses) in the begining of the text also in the Maṅglācaraṇa at the end of the text. Bhūṣaṇasāra is basically a Vyākhyā (Explanation) of the 74 Kārikās where Koṇḍabhaṭṭa disproves the claims of the philosophical positions of Nyāya & Mīmāṃsā on topics related to grammar and solidifies his position. He has also used Kārikās from the 'Vākyapadīyam' written by Bhartṛhari to further explain himself. There is a commentary by Āpadeva callled Sphoṭanirūpaṇa running parallel in the text. This Ms. is written in 11–16 lines per folio. There are vertical margins with 3- 4 black lines on both sides. Cover and back page are blank. Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Corrections and additions in the margins. Significant syllables and words rubbed with orange powder for highlighting.
