About this Manuscript

The Āryāvalokiteśvara Guṇakāraṇḍavyūha Mahāyānasūtraratnarāja foundational scriptures in Newar Buddhism. This text is structured as an epic narrative detailing the miraculous deeds, cosmic manifestations, and infinite compassion of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. The sutra contains a unique cosmogony where major Hindu deities are born from Avalokiteśvara’s body. the Guṇakāraṇḍavyūha is like a Buddhist purāṇa on the theme of Avalokiteśvara. It is also very similar to the middle-period of development of the Svayambhūpurāṇa. This work covers here 21 chapters. It is written most probably in verses but seems it is a prose writing. The manuscript is good highlighted in red ink. (see Guṇakāraṇḍavyūha sutra project )
