About this Manuscript

Āśvalāyanagṛhyasutra is a Kalpaśāstra text used to perform various Vedic/Hindu rituals, rites, ceremonies and Saṃskāras particularly domestic rituals in households ranging from conception to death of a person. It is a Smṛti text based on the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa of the Ṛgveda. It is part of the 6 Vedāṅgas (Imagined body parts of the Vedic texts in the form of a person that is Vedapuruṣa) which are listed as Chanda (Feet of the Vedas), Kalpa (Hands), Jyotiṣa (Eyes), Nirukta (Ears), Śikṣā (Nose), Vyākaraṇa (Mouth). The text consists of 4 Adhyāyas (chadters) which are further devided into Khaṇḍas (sections). This Ms. contains Adhyāya 1 from (f.1b–18b). Adhyāya 2 from (f.19a–25b). Adhyāya 3 from (f.25b–33b). Adhyāya 4 from (f.33b–42a). This Ms. is written 9 lines per folio. Cover and back page are blank. Title present in colophon (f. 42a). The text contains red metric accents. Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. Significant syllables and words rubbed with orange powder for highlighting. The Ms. is dated: śake 1755 in (f. 42a).
