Varāha Purāṇa

The Varāha Purāṇa is one of the eighteen Mahāpurāṇas and is primarily a Vaiṣṇava text. It takes its name from the Varāha Avatāra (the Boar incarnation of Viṣṇu), who rescued the Earth (Prithvi) from the ocean. The work is structured as a dialogue between the Varāha incarnation and Prithvi. After Varāha lifts the Earth from the cosmic waters, she asks him a series of questions about creation, the nature of God, and the proper way for humans to live. It covers a several sub chapters including; religious vows dedicated to Viṣṇu, the sacred region of Mathurā, Vṛndāvana, and Varāha description, the origin of the Mātṛkās etc.
