Bhāgavatapurāṇa

Bhāgavatapurāṇa is listed among the 18 Mahāpurāṇas. Like most Purāṇic texts it contains wide range of topics and genres like Dhārma (Moral Duties), Darśana (Philosophy), Itihāsa (Storied Legends based on teachings of Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Mokśa), Bhūgola (Geography), Ācāra-Vicāra (Good conduct and thought process), Jñāna-Vijñāna (Meta-knowledge). The Bhāgavatapurāṇa primarily belongs to the Vaiṣṇava philosophy. It emphasizes devotion to Kṛṣṇa, avatāra (incarnate) of supreme deity Viṣṇu. The text discuses the creation of the universe, different realms of existance and the cyclic nature of time. The text is rich in philosophies of Vedānta sects like Advaita, Viśiṣṭādvaita and Dvaita. It has abundance of Bhakti Yoga and some elements of Sāṃkhya philosophy. The text is also popularly used as a prayer in public gatherings for devotion commonly known as Bhāgavata Kaathā narrated and explained by a Kathā Vācaka (Story Teller) to the audience envoking themes related to Dharma in the context of domestic and professional life. The main text consists of 12 Skandhas (Cantos) which are further divided into 335 Adhyāyas with 18,000 verses depending on the edition. This Ms. contains a title and back page for each Skandha. Skandha-1 (9 Adhyāyas) (f.1a–27a) part 1, Skandha-2 (10 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–14b) part 2, Skandha-3 (33 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–47b) part 3, Skandha-4 (31 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–49a) part 4, Skandha-5 (26 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–39a) part 5, Skandha-6 (9 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–29a) part 6. Skandha-7 (15 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–26b) part 7, Skandha-8 (24 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–32a) part 8, Skandha-9 (24 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–31a) part 9, Skandha-10 (90 Adhyāyas) Pūrvardha (Adhyāya 1–49) (f.1b–68b) part 10, Uttarārdha (Adhyāya 50–90 ) (f.1b–62b) part 11, Skandha-11 (31 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–43a) part 12, Skandha-12 (13 Adhyāyas) (f.1b–18b) part 13. This Ms. is written in 13–14 lines per folio. Title present in intermediate colophon after every chapter. There are double red vertical margins present on each side of the folio. The (Pūrṇavirāma) full stop style vertical brackets are in red. Mistakes are covered with yellow. Marginal corrections and some lengthy additions are present in the text. Significant syllables and words are rubbed with orange powder for highlighting. The Ms. is dated in (f.43a) part 12.
