About this Manuscript

Āśvalāyanagṛhyasutra is a Kalpaśāstra text used to perform various Vedic/Hindu rituals, rites, ceremonies and Saṃskāras particularly domestic rituals in households ranging from conception to death of a person. It is a Smṛti text based on the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa of the Ṛgveda. It is part of the 6 Vedāṅgas (Imagined body parts of the Vedic texts in the form of a person that is Vedapuruṣa) which are listed as Chanda (Feet of the Vedas), Kalpa (Hands), Jyotiṣa (Eyes), Nirukta (Ears), Śikṣā (Nose), Vyākaraṇa (Mouth). The text consists of 4 Adhyāyas (chadters) which are further devided into Khaṇḍas (sections). This Ms. contains Adhyāya 1 from (f.1b–17a). Adhyāya 2 from (f.17a–23b). Adhyāya 3 from (f.23b–29b). Adhyāya 4 from (f.29b–37a). This Ms. is written 7–9 lines per folio. Cover and back page contain title. Invocation, colophon, introduction of speakers are highlighted in red. The double Pūrna Virāma (full stop) style vertical brackets in the margins are red. Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Some marginal corrections, word divisions marked in red. Ms. is Dated on folio(37a)1932 Vikrama Saṃvata, caitravadya, 1 candravāsare (1875 CE, Wednesday, April 7).
