About this Manuscript
Āśvalāyanaśrautasūtra is a Kalpaśāstra text used to perform various Vedic rituals, rites, ceremonies like Darśapūrṇamāsā yāga, Agnihotra, Niruddha, Paśuva, Agniṣṭoma etc. It is a Smṛti text based on the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa of the Ṛgveda. It is part of the 6 Vedāṅgas (Imagined body parts of the Vedic texts in the form of a person that is Vedapuruṣa) which are listed as Chanda (Feet of the Vedas), Kalpa (Hands), Jyotiṣa (Eyes), Nirukta (Ears), Śikṣā (Nose), Vyākaraṇa (Mouth). It is basically a manual which gives details on how to perform Vedic rituals which generally requires commentaries for proper understanding of the text. The text is divided into 12 Adhyāya (chapters). This Ms. contains two parts first part contains the first six chapters and the second contains the remaining six out of the 12. Part 1; Adhyāya 1 from (f.1b–13b), Adhyāya 2 from (f. 13–33b), Adhyāya 3 from (f.33b–47b), Adhyāya 4 from (f.47b–61b), Adhyāya 5 from (f.61b–80a), Adhyāya 6 from (f.80a–92b). Part 2; Adhyāya 7 from (f.1b–12b), Adhyāya 8 from (f.12b–27b), Adhyāya 9 from (f.27b–36a), Adhyāya 10 from (f.36b–43b), Adhyāya 11 from (43b–48a), Adhyāya 12 from (48a–58a). This Ms. is written in 9 lines per folio. Title present in colophan of both parts. Thare are double black vertical margins present on each side of the folio. The are red word divisions. Mistakes are covered with yellow. Some marginal corrections are present.
