Introduction
About this Manuscript
The manuscript is a collection of Buddhist devotional hymns (stotras) dedicated to various sacred figures and concepts of the Buddhist tradition. The extant colophons indicate the inclusion of the Jyotirūpa Stotra from the Svāyambhu Mahāpurāṇa, the Mahābodhi Vandanāṣṭaka, the Guhyeśvarīdevī Stotra, the Triratnāṣṭaka Stotra, the Ṣaṭpāramitā Stotra attributed to Buddha Bhaṭṭāraka, and the Lokanātha Sundarāṣṭaka. The work is primarily devotional in nature and reflects the religious practices of the Buddhist tradition, particularly the Newar Buddhist milieu of Nepal. Since one of the colophons explicitly attributes the Jyotirūpa Stotra to the Svāyambhu Mahāpurāṇa, it is possible that some or all of the hymns preserved in the manuscript were compiled or excerpted from the Svāyambhu Mahāpurāṇa. However, this remains a tentative observation pending further textual comparison.
