Sucandra Gṛhapati Kathā

The manuscript contains a Buddhist didactic narrative centred on the wealthy householder Sucandra and his wife Candravatī. The story portrays the prosperity and religious devotion of the family and introduces several characters, including Yadumatī, Sunanda, Ḍimbhaka, and the sons of Sucandra. Numerous passages are framed as dialogues and sermons delivered by the Buddha (Bhagavān, Tathāgata), emphasizing the workings of karma, the accumulation of merit, and the consequences of sinful deeds. One episode concerns the desecration and subsequent restoration of a stūpa, highlighting the religious importance of stūpa worship and acts of expiation. References to royal figures such as Dharmapāla and repeated moral exhortations indicate that the narrative was intended to impart Buddhist ethical and devotional values. The work may therefore be classified as a text belonging to the tradition of Buddhist Avadāna or didactic narrative literature.
