About this Manuscript

The text Jyotiṣkedāra is composed in 1762–63 A. D. by Kṛpāśaṅkara, son of Chājurāma. The text contains astrological math calculations and explanations about what different good or lucky astrological combinations mean and how they affect people. This work has four parts- first samhitā (including Muhūrta) , second Gaṅita (astronomy only), Horā (jātaka and tajika), and Praśṇa. The manuscript contains first samhitā (including Muhūrta) , second Gaṅita (astronomy only)and Horā. Samhitā part divided in five parts, First pallava is on Saṁhitāśubhāśubha kathana(f. 1b–5b), Second pallava Muhūrta kathana(f. 5b–8b), Third Saṁskāra kathana(f.8b–10b), Fourth Vivāha kathana(f. 10b–15a), Fifth Yātrā kathana(f. 15b–22a). Second Gaṅita (astronomy only) contains three part first part is grahasphuṭika(f. 22b–24b), Second Prakirṇa(f. 24b–25b), Third Grahaṇ kathana(f. 26a–28a). Third Horā (jātaka and tajika) part contains eight pallava. First jātaka(f.28a–30a), second jātaka(f. 30a– 32a), Third jātaka(f. 32a–34a), Fourth jātaka(f. 34a–35a), Fifth jātaka(f. 35a–40a), Sixth jātaka(f.40a– 41b), Seventh jātaka(f. 42b–44a), Eight jātaka(f. 44a–46b). Some pages are mixed.(f. 1a, 21a, 32b, 40b, 43b) are in blank pages. Title is taken from colophon (f. 46b). It is written in 8-10 lines per leaf.; 46 leaves are foliated 1–46, upper left and lower right verso. Mistakes are blacked out; some corrections and additions in margins; significant syllables, words, or phrases highlighted in red throughout; vertical margins marked with double red line.; A single board supports the manuscript. It has a flower drawn in black in the center, along with a Sanskrit prayer dedicated to the deity Gaṇeśa.
