Description
Gāyatrīsahasranāmastotra is a devotional text dedicated to the Gāyatrī mantra deitified as a goddess. The text is in praise of the 1000 names associated with goddess Gāyatrī presented as a dialogue between supreme deity Maheśvara (Śiva) and his consort Umā (Pārvatī). It is part of the Gāyatrīmāhātmyam section of the Skandapurāṇa which is a major purāṇic text. The Gāyatrī mantra is a highly revered vedic verse found in the 3rd Mandala; 62nd Sukta; 10th Mantra of the Ṛgveda Saṃhitā. It is dedicated to Savitā (the Sun deity), the ṛṣi associated is Viśvāmitra and the meter of the verse is Gayatri from which the verse is named. Gayatri meter consists of 24 varnas (syllables) and three pādas (stanzas) in total. This Ms. is written in 9 lines per folio. Title present in colophon (f. 13a). Alternate title Gāyatrisahasra present in title and back page (f. 14b). Mistakes are covered with yellow or blacked out. Some corrections and additions in the margins. Some folios are treated with yellow turmeric powder. The double pūrna virāma style full stop brackets, speaker titles and colophon are in red.
