Description

Caraṇavyūha mentions the fourfold methods for reciting Ṛgveda of all the five śākhas among which Śāṅkhāyana - śākhā comes at the second place. The fourfold methods of recitation, according to Caraṇavyūha are — Saṁhitā pārāyaṇa , Jaṭa pārāyaṇa, Pada pārāyaṇa , Daṇḍa pārāyaṇa. When the Caraṇavyūha prescribes the fourfold methods of all the five Samhitas, it accepts the existence of the Śānkhāyana-Saṁhitā because in the absence of the saṁhitā text the prescription for fourfold recitations would be baseless.
