Description
Aṣṭādhyāyī is a grammar text or Vyākaraṇaśāstra written in Sūtras by Pāṇini. The text consists of 8 Adhyāyas (Chapters) and each adhyāy consists of 4 Pādas (Sub-chapters). The text contains about 3995–3997 Sūtras including the 14 Maheśvara/Pratyāhāra Sūtras a type of compressed Varṇa Mālā (Vowel and Consonant list). Depending on the Ms. two Sūtras may be treated as one at various places in the text. Aṣṭādhyāyī is part of the 6 Vedāṅgas (Imagined body parts of the Vedic texts in the form of a person that is Vedapuruṣa) which are listed as Chanda (Feet of the Vedas), Kalpa (Hands), Jyotiṣa (Eyes), Nirukta (Ears), Śikṣā (Nose), Vyākaraṇa (Mouth). This Ms. contains Maṅglācaraṇa, Pratyāhāra Sūtras, Sūtras of Adhyāya 1 and subsequent Pādas are in (f. 1b), (f. 2b), (f. 3b), (f.4b); Adhyāya 2 (f.6a), (f.7a), (f. 7b), (f. 9a); Adhyāya 3 (f. 10a), (f. 12a), (f. 14b), (f. 16b); Adhyāya 4 (f. 18a), (f. 20b), (f. 22b), (f. 24b); Adhyāya 5- (f. 25b), (f. 31b), (f. 34a), (f. 36a); Adhyāya 6 (f. 38a), (f. 41b), (f.44b), (f. 47a); Adhyāya 7 (f. 49b), (f. 50b), (f.52b), (f.54a); Adhyāya 8 (f. 55a), (f. 56a), (f. 57b), (f. 59b). This Ms. is written 9–10 lines per folio. There are faded double red vertical line margins except for a few folios. Cover and back page contains title. (f.1a), (f.1b), (f. 50a), (f. 50b) treated with yellow turmeric powder. Significant syllables and words rubbed with orange powder for highlighting. Mistakes are blacked out. Some minor corrections and additions in the margins. The Ms. is dated 1647 Śaka Saṃvata pauṣaśuddha in (f. 60a). .
